Definitions of Technical Terms Kilowatt Hour - or kWh- The typical way electrical power usage is measured. This is how your power company calculates your bill each month. They usually have there lowest rate set for the first 1000 kWh, a higher rate for anything above that and then a fuel charge tacked on above that. Rates will vary across the country from from 5c to 20c per kWh. The Grid - The electrical distribution system used to distribute power in the US & Canada. There are 3 divided loops to the system, East-Central, Western & Texan. This allows power to be generated in areas of the country with low pollution standards and lots of coal (like KY) and sold in areas with high pollution standards at very high rates (like NY). In my opinion, this is why UCSA has been shut out in KY. Watts to Horse Power Conversion- 753 watts = 1 HP The test data for the prototype Hummingbird motor, the one taken on tour in 1999, showed that the electrical input was approx. 450 watts and the output was approx. 3.1 HP or 2310 watts. The motor's HP was measured with a calibrated dynamometer. The efficiency ratio is output/input or 2310/450 = 5.13 This is why we can say that the motor puts out 5 times more than it uses. ( Numerous independent technicians and instruments were used.) Since then two larger motors have been prototyped, a 50 and 150 HP. They too show the 5 to 1 ratio ! 1st Law of Thermodynamics - Energy can not be created or destroyed. Energy just changes forms. In the case of the Hummingbird motor, the output being 5 times the input does not give the full picture. This only shows the ratio of the electrical input and output. There is also a magnetic component being added to the input that science does not yet fully understand. The permanent magnets in the Hummingbird motor are adding the equivalent of about 2100 watts to the input. That is where the additional power is coming from. There are also heat losses from the system too. We are just saying that the net observable efficiency is about 5 to 1 or 400%. Energy is simply changing form from magnetic to mechanical energy. We really don't know how long it will take to deplete the permanent magnets. By the same token, we really do not know how long it will take our sun to be consumed either but we continue to enjoy the benefits thereof. |
